Face Off: Virtual Desktop or Remote Desktop
There are two emerging virtual desktop technologies on the market today. Both are significant competitors in the data desktop network market. Both can be simplify be used toossibly improve manageability and reduce IT costs, and promote IT agility. Both allow for the same data, applications, and services to be accessed from a centralized location. This market growth is likely to continue, given the current trends for increased employee mobility and the growing adoption of mobile technologies.
The remote desktop is typically an end-user application, like a web browser, that is executed on the central machine by the company’s operating system or hypervisor. The employee installs it on their own machine. It can be accessed from another computer by connecting to their workstation or mobile device. This enables the remote user to access the same machine, as well as, to access data from and other computers as well as their smart phones. The employee can work from anywhere, even with a cell phone, and the main computer system is optimized to work with the cell phone signal.
On the other hand, the virtual desktop is a software program, like a conventional desktop, which is installed on the central computer system. The installation is handled by the IT company. The employee installs from a web-based client. This means the employee may install the software, even on a cell phone, without dealing with the installation physically. The software may be managed through a web page, or the employee can install it upon the purchase of a CD.
The operating system and application software is stored on the server. The server is connected to the company’s server with a private network, a VPN (Virtual Private Network). The VPN uses a pair of existing connections (the customer’s computer and the IT company’s computer). These two existing connections can be used to guarantee that no information is lost should the VPN connection be compromised. The remote user can be installed to the network through the public internet, or through a private IP address.
Some IT companies allow their customers to install virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) on their existing mainframe. Customers can install desktops, laptops, file and print servers on the same hardware. The main benefit is that IT companies can sell “virtual” desktops that are capable of performing any number of virtual functions, such as file and print servers.
The market for virtual desktops is expected to extend beyond connectivity into the enterprise environment. Business owners are attracted to the idea of their employees being mobile, and the productivity that comes with it, especially for groups that do not have a traditional office. Although virtual desktops are a great solution for companies that have a virtual environment in their IT environment, there is a need for something that is better at tracking and managing information, and at integrating it to the mainstream business environment.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
The biggest opportunity in terms of enabling virtual desktop generation is for application delivery networks. Virtual Desktop Infrastructures enable remote users to access the information and applications necessary to meet their business needs. This approach is attracting large amounts of value, especially for those companies that do not have an application delivery network in place. This is not a solution for all companies, but for companies that have a significant need for it, it is the most cost effective option. Currently, RDS is available on all Dell server models.
Virtual Desktop Hosting
This is a service that allows hosting of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on a Virtual Private Network (VPN). It is a connection through the internet to a VPN server that is configured to resolve clients to the virtual desktop. The VPN server can be connected to handle the requests and is also capable of recycling the information so that it is sent to the client again. This process is much like normal desktop sharing. Information can be placed on the desktop and sent to the network server. The VDI network is a powerful tool that allows remote users to access corporate information and productivity applications as if they were sitting at their desk in the office.
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
This is a suite of applications designed to leveraging conventional remote procedures from different locations. This allows a device to represent a centralized entity, offering new capabilities including business process automation, IT resource management, and group working. RDP is also being used to implement preventative maintenance and enhancements for IT infrastructure.
